Background
MFACE is a traveler engagement platform designed to simplify and speed up airport experiences. This solution enables travelers to access their gates without needing to retrieve their passports or boarding passes. MFACE enhances convenience for everyone, from parents with young children to elderly passengers, by eliminating the hassle of locating identification. Currently available in several airports across the United States and Europe, MFACE was developed with a commitment to touchless travel after COVID-19. Its goal is to make journeys smoother and alleviate common travel concerns, such as running late or needing to interact with shared surfaces.
Challenge
For this project, we implemented a scalable, elegant, and accessible design system. The biggest challenge lay in ensuring that each new component could scale effectively over time. With significant design debt in the original product, I focused on building elements that would not only meet current needs but also support future growth. Another major hurdle was the lack of direct access to real users for testing; instead, design decisions were guided by subject matter experts (SMEs) whose insights helped identify the most impactful features and components.
Goal
MFACE was initially developed several years ago without a unified design system, leading to a fragmented visual experience. The lack of cohesion among components resulted in a chaotic interface that negatively impacted both brand perception and overall usability. The primary objective of the recent UI redesign was to introduce consistency across visual elements, enhancing the product’s professionalism and ensuring it more accurately represents the brand’s standards.
My Impact
I worked on redesigning multiple pages, focusing on reinterpreting the original designs within a new design system built alongside the MUI Design System. Collaborating closely with the senior designer and engineer, I created a cohesive set of components and pages that significantly improved the overall experience for both new and established users.
The Process
Ideation and Iteration
As my teammates completed the design audit and established core elements of the design system, I focused on redesigning my assigned pages and components. I used existing system elements where possible and created new ones when necessary, always aligning with design heuristics. My goal was to present information in a way that maximized user value on each page. Below are the core principles I adhered to throughout the ideation process.
Value for the user
Common pattern
Visual Excellence
By answering key questions, I was able to approach each component redesign with a user-centered focus. Each exploration led to multiple versions and iterations, which I discussed with the team before deciding on final implementations. For each component, my goal was to present information in various ways and develop scalable patterns that could be adapted for future needs.
Out with the old in with the New
Keeping it Simple
I approached the project with a traditional yet user-friendly design philosophy, focusing on keeping the flows straightforward and intuitive with a hint of playfulness. I aimed to avoid overwhelming elements or steps, ensuring users could seamlessly accomplish tasks like adding, deleting flights, and initiating the biometric reading process for each journey.
Recreating Photo Capture
In redesigning the app interface, I determined that all graphics needed to be clearer and more modern to guide the user through the process. Since the biometric reading only takes about half a second, illustrations play a crucial role in helping the user understand what to do next. For the photo capture redesign, the key idea was to ensure users could see themselves in the camera, providing visual context, while also offering clear, concise directions to facilitate a smooth experience.

Conclusion
This has been one of my favorite projects to work on. IDEMIA is such an iconic brand in the biometric reading, and I really enjoyed revamping the user experience for their platform. It was a pleasure to improve the experience in terms of enjoyment, cohesiveness, and information layout. Having the opportunity to completely redesign an existing interface doesn’t come around often, so it was a great chance to flex my creative muscles and get into the mindset of the users of such prestigious brand.
